Whisper it who dares, I am old enough to remember the heady days of the Vietnam protests, Woodstock, the Doors, and that whole, rather remarkable period when American youth was prepared to take to the streets in protest against intolerance of all kinds.

They've gone awfully quiet, haven't they?

No flag-burning in the streets over Kyoto. No protests over the sabre-rattling, or the revivial of the industrial-military complex. No powerful environmental movement that I have heard anything about of late. Is everyone over there too busy amassing money and shafting their neighbours to be bothered?

(OK, I admit the Europeans aren't doing too well either - but, after all, we expect a bit of leadership....)
