Interesting that you should say that because if you have strong trade links the political links come almost as a by-product. The EU itself is a classic example of trying to force political union on to people who don't want it. The pretense for war was the Sudetanland/French union, the Czech/Slovak one and the Danzig corridor. Possibly the most recent example is that of the break-up of Yugoslavia. Forcing countries into unnatural unions is a sure recipe for disaster with unforseen consequences.
You would have thought that the EU would have learnt from that.
