The dot com crash of 2000 and the credit crunch etc. of 2008 gave rise to many of these stories.

I had nothing that caused real personal hardship, though I did have some free shares with my employer, Morse plc.

They floated in 1999 at £2.50, got up as far as about £8 in March 2000, then went relentlessly downhill as far as (I think) about 5p per share before being taken over.

My share options were worth about £200K on paper at one time (when I was tied in and couldn't sell). I eventually managed to sell some for about £10K, and I was one of the lucky ones.

Similarly, working in the Scottish banking industry I heard of many colleagues who had both job and life savings in the likes of RBS and saw both disappear from under their feet.

Scott.
