As a border to our drive we planted a row of these:

We've had them a couple of years and they seem to be really struggling. They seem to be correct for the location. That is a narrow 30cm length of soil between drive and pavement; exposed, no walls or fences. Pruned once a year.

The leaves lack a bit of colour, the bush generally looks a bit spindly, and it doesn't seem to be growing much.

Any tips and how to improve the situation and make these bushes happier?
