The number of homes worth more than £1million has fallen by a third...

As sellers have been forced to reduce their asking prices, there are now 35 per cent fewer homes with a £1 million plus price tag, according to the property website Zoopla.co.uk.

The North East has been the worst hit by the downturn, suffering an 83 per cent slide in the number of million pound homes in the region, followed by Wales at 56 per cent and the Midlands at per cent.

Earlier this year, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal put his 11-bedroom mansion, estimated to be worth £40 million before the credit crunch, up for rent after failing to find a buyer, while neighbouring homes have been abandoned and taken over by squatters.
