If AV goes through, I suspect that it would only have relatively small effect. Yet to hear the cries of the NO camp, one would think it to be the end of civilisation as we know it! Such massive exaggeration merits nothing but contempt - and a YES vote.

The reason the politicians want a No vote is that they know that if AV is defeated they can say "Everyone's happy with FPTP" and ignore the issue for another generation or three. They're not afraid of AV, but they're scared s***less of any system that would truly hold them to account.

Consider this: We have had two major crises over the past few years, one in the banking sector, and the other around MPs expenses (which was really an issue around accountability). In response to both crises, the politicians of all the major parties said that they would introduce enormous changes to make sure we wouldn't end up in the same situations again.

So what have they done? Are the banks under any new regulation? Are they behaving differently? Are they supporting the economy instead of doing what they've done for the past thirty years (ie, help themselves to as much of everyone else's money as they could)?

Is you MP any more accountable now than he was before the expenses crisis broke? Has anything been done apart from an expenses system that seems even more opaque (and expensive) than the one it replaced?

These two matters should have been top of the agenda for whichever party or parties emerged victorious from last year's election. They're nowhere.

So I'm voting Yes, not because it's an ideal system, but because those people we need to hold to account seem determined that I should vote No, and are prepared to lie to me to make sure I do.
